What to expect in Ms. Byrne's Art 1 Class:
Homework:
There are three types of homework you will get in my art class: (1) sketchbook assignments (2) gathering ideas or inspiration for a project and (3) facebook posts.
Sketchbook Assignments: DUE WEEKLY ON DAY 5
Critiques:
I believe critiques are an extremely important component of the art making process. Throughout the year we will take the time to pause what we are doing and look at both works in process and final pieces. Full participation is expected during critiques. This means cell phones away, music off, no side conversations, and thoughtful contributions. The guidelines and expectations of each critique will be clearly explained to you before we begin each time. Your participation in critiques will be calculated into both your project grade and your participation grade.
Writing Assignments:
Occasionally short writing assignments will be given to further the exploration of the current topic. These assignments are to be typewritten and not more than two pages. Don’t worry, when there is a writing assignment it will be included in the lesson handout and the guidelines to be met will be clearly described.

Sketchbook Assignments: DUE WEEKLY ON DAY 5
- Every week, you will be given a word, topic, or item to illustrate in your sketchbook using a drawing medium you desire. A critique of the entire class’ interpretations of the word will be held where everyone discusses their ideas and talks about the connections made to the elements and principles of design. You will hand in your sketchbooks for a grade from 1-4 in correlation with the art department general grading rubric (4 being the best: student used up the whole page and used value and/or color successfully with no white paper showing through to express their idea in a convincing manner).
- Sketchbook assignments are to be done outside of class as homework or in between class projects in the art room. You are expected to spend at least 45 minutes-1 hour working on each assignment throughout the week. These assignments are to encourage the mind, to be creative outside of class, to be inspired, to learn how to critique, and to learn new materials and techniques.
- Subject matter should be from observation, imagination or your own photograph. No copyrighted cartoons or images off of the internet (will be calculated as a zero if used). These assignments should be original artwork for possible portfolio entries!

Random things:
- You can’t make art if you aren’t in art class. You can’t participate in discussions and critiques if you aren’t in art class.
- Please feel free to drink water at your desks. I’m more than happy to let you eat during class, just ask me first. All food and other beverages must be kept on the table near the door and consumed away from all artwork.
- My classroom practices Responsible Digital Citizenship.
- I am 100% okay with you listening to music during class. I only ask that (1) you don’t listen to music while I am demonstrating something or during class discussions/critiques (2) you only wear one earbud at a time and (3) you keep the volume of your music at a reasonable level.
- Backpacks, bags, and other personal items should be kept in the designated area by the door. Please keep at your desk only the items you will need for class.
- At no point should work from other classes be done during art class.
- If you have a question, ask two of your peers before you ask me. Chances are someone will be able to help you out :)
- Cleaning the art room is the responsibility of each individual student. Please make sure your supplies are put away in the proper location, your work area is clean, and your artwork is properly stored before leaving class.
- Do not line up at the door before the bell.
- All handouts for the class will be available electronically. Only a few paper copies will be available in class. If you prefer paper handouts please let me know individually.
- Check the website! Everything you need will be on the website. If it’s not there, let me know and I will make sure to add it.
- Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. I am only here part time, but I try to make myself as available as possible! I will stay after school at least once a week for extra help and art time. This day will be posted on the board each Monday.
