Sketchbook Assignments: DUE WEEKLY ON DAY 6
- Every week, students will be given a word, topic, or item to illustrate in their sketchbook using a drawing medium they desires. The assignment will be due based on our 7-day rotating schedule. A critique of the entire class’ interpretations of the word will be held where students discuss their ideas and talk about the connections made to the elements and principles of design. Students will hand in their sketchbooks for a grade from 1-4 in correlation with the art department general grading rubric (4 being the best: student used up the whole page and used value and/or color successfully with no white paper showing through to express their idea in a convincing manner).
- If a student does not get a 4 on their sketchbook, they can improve the sketchbook assignment to the qualification of a 4 before each term ends. The new assignment for the next week will be given upon teacher hand back of newly graded work. Sketchbook assignments are to be done outside of class as homework or in between class projects in the art room. Students are expected to spend at least 45 minutes-1 hours working on each assignment throughout the week. Project by project, students will learn new concepts, skills and techniques; they will be expected to apply new skills to their sketchs as the year moves along. (For example: if we are learning about shading and value, students will focus on creating a pencil drawing with a wide array of values). This will show that they are practicing new techniques. These assignments are to encourage the mind, to be creative outside of class, to be inspired, to learn how to critique, and to learn new materials and techniques.
- ***NOTE TO THOSE INTERESTED IN MAJOR/MINOR IN ART: Subject matter should be from observation, imagination or your own photograph. No copyrighted cartoons or images off of the Internet (will be calculated as a zero if used). These assignments should be original artwork for possible portfolio entries!
- Students may hand in missing sketchbook assignments at any time (missing or improved) for full credit throughout the term, until the week before grades close. Any work handed in later than that will only be considered partial credit or no credit if too late (this will be at the discretion of the teacher). Students will get a participation grade for (1) handing in the sketchbook assignment on the day it is actually due as an incentive to not allow for sketchbooks to build up to the last week of the term and (2) for full participation in the critique of the work (having the drawing and critiquing = 100%). If handed in on the actual date the student will receive 100% participation for the week. If not completed on the day it is due, but the student participated in critique they will receive 75% participation for the week. If student refuses to critique they will receive 0% participation for the week.
